Helping people overcome their perceived obstacles really makes me love my work. That is why I started X Factory Test Prep. Seeing students achieve their best math scores by using my calculator-focused methods makes me do a happy dance. But I’ll be honest—it did not happen overnight.

A few years back… ok, more than a few years … I was spending most of my time tutoring students for their school math courses. In my spare time, I enjoyed writing programs for my graphing calculator. At first, those were just fun simulations and doodles: I programmed it to flip a coin 1000 times and report the number of ‘heads’, and I drew happy faces using the graphing and shading functions.

One day while teaching a student to solve quadratic equations, my hand was tired from writing out all the solutions myself along with the student. I decided that I needed to make this easier on myself, because I personally didn’t need the practice! So, I wrote a calculator program that would allow me to get the solutions to ALL of those types of equations just by pressing a few buttons each time.

I considered this such a success that I wrote a few more of these time-saving programs, and eventually I was using them every day in tutoring sessions. I was quite happy that my problem was solved. What I didn’t expect was that my students took notice and started asking what I was doing - how I got the answers so quickly.

That was how I stumbled upon the idea to teach them how to use the programs for standardized tests such as the SAT and ACT, and let me tell you—it was like flipping a switch. Suddenly, things started to click, I couldn’t believe how much better the students were scoring with these shortcuts in their corner.

I poured my heart into refining this process - by writing many more programs and quickly developing a successful test prep program. Soon, lots of students were improving their scores more than they had thought possible, and without all the grueling studying. I’m glad to now be sharing my methods with the world, as I sincerely wish the same success for every student committed to improving.

Here’s a little peek behind the scenes: I’m obsessed with puzzles, the more challenging, the better. Give me an IKEA box and an Allen key, and I’m in my happy zone (yes, really). My soul lights up anywhere there’s fresh snow, and when I’m not working, you’ll probably find me outside, soaking up lake views, getting my hands dirty in the garden, or cruising around on my bike.
